Changing the drive letter of a removable disk

 

Useful for:

  • Finding "missing" flash drives (Ex. You plug in your flash drive and nothing appears in "My Computer" and nothing auto-runs)

  • Freeing up drive letters for mapping network drives

  • Customizing your drive letters to be more logical

Follow these steps to change the drive letter:

  1. Click the Start button on your Windows Taskbar


  2. Open the Control Panel


  3. Open Administrative Tools


  4. Open Computer Management


  5. Click on Disk Management on the left hand menu


  6. Right-Click the white box containing the drive letter on the bottom right side of the window of the drive you wish to change


  7. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths


  8. Select a drive letter that is not currently being used


  9. Click “Ok”


  10. Open“My Computer” and your new drive should appear
